Evolsin® Molluscum Contagiosum Treatment

Solution for the local treatment of molluscum contagiosum.

What are molluscum contagiosum?

Molluscum contagiosum is a viral infection caused by the molluscum contagiosum virus, a member of the poxvirus family, which can infect humans and other primates. This virus causes the appearance of translucent, pinhead-shaped bumps with a central dimple. It is a very common infection in children and can affect any part of the body. In adults, there is a second peak in incidence due to sexual transmission.

How does infection occur?

Infection occurs through direct skin contact with an infected person or via contaminated objects. Transmission from mother to fetus is also possible. Molluscum contagiosum is a common viral infection found worldwide, primarily affecting children between the ages of 2 and 10. The incidence in industrialized countries is 5-8%, while in warmer climates with lower socioeconomic and hygiene standards, it is around 20%. There is no gender difference in prevalence, although 62% of affected children have a history of eczema.

How does an infection with molluscum contagiosum occur?

After an incubation period of 15 days to 6 months, translucent skin nodules with a central dimple appear in varying sizes (from 1-2 mm to 10 mm in diameter), often multiple times. Any area of ​​skin can be affected, but they are more common on the face and in skin folds, as well as generally on exposed skin. The individual nodules usually grow for 6-12 weeks and then stabilize. The appearance of new nodules often leads to reinfection, which can last longer.

Can the infection cause local or systemic complications?

In 30% of cases, an eczema, also known as "eczema molluscatum," can occur in the area of ​​the molluscum contagiosum lesions; this phenomenon is more common in people with atopic dermatitis. Complications are generally not possible.

Can molluscum contagiosum cause other diseases?

No.

How do I diagnose molluscum contagiosum?

The diagnosis of molluscum contagiosum is generally clinical, i.e., it is made by dermatologists or pediatricians simply looking at the affected skin, and is relatively easy if several translucent nodules with a dimple in the middle are seen.

How are molluscum contagiosum treated?

There are numerous treatments for removing molluscum contagiosum; however, in infants, it is recommended to simply wait until they clear up on their own. Generally, treatment is necessary to prevent the infection from spreading from one person to another.

Areas of application:

Evolsin® Molluscum Contagiosum Treatment is indicated for the topical treatment of molluscum contagiosum. Based on a 5% potassium hydroxide solution (caustic potassium chloride), the product works by dissolving cells infected with the molluscum contagiosum virus and creating an inflammatory reaction, after which the virus disappears. Prior to treatment with Evolsin® Molluscum Contagiosum Treatment, a diagnosis confirming the presence of a molluscum contagiosum virus infection must always be performed.

Application

Apply the solution morning and evening exclusively to the molluscum contagiosum lesions using the spatula applicator and allow it to dry thoroughly to prevent the product from getting onto the surrounding healthy skin. Ensure that the product is applied to all lesions. After treating 3-5 lesions, dip the spatula back into the bottle of solution.

The following points should be noted in particular:

• Always hold the bottle upright.
• Remove excess solution from the spatula by wiping it, if necessary, on the inside of the bottle opening.
• Do not use for 4 weeks after opening.
