What should I do if my child has been diagnosed with head lice?

If your child – or another family member – has been diagnosed with lice, prompt action is crucial. Only by taking quick action against lice can you prevent the infestation from spreading further. Is it true that head lice can transmit diseases?

No. Head lice are unpleasant, but completely harmless. Unlike other parasites (such as ticks), lice in Germany and Europe usually do not transmit diseases. However, an infestation can at least increase the risk of certain illnesses. This can happen, for example, if vigorous scratching of the itchy bites creates wounds through which bacteria can enter the body.

Can lice actually jump from head to head?

No, lice don't jump from one head of hair to another. Since lice can't jump, fly, or even swim, transmission usually only occurs when the parasites crawl from head to head. In rare cases, however, transmission through shared objects (e.g., hairbrushes, hats, etc.) is also possible.

Do I have to inform the school or kindergarten management that my child has lice?

Yes, according to the Infection Protection Act (§34 para. 5 IfSG), parents or guardians are obligated to report a lice infestation to the management of the community facility their child attends. The management will then take steps to prevent the infestation from spreading. The timeline for when your child can return to the facility varies.
