Tumor cells express a characteristic isoform of the key enzyme pyruvate kinase. This isoenzyme, Tumor M2-PK, enters the circulation and can be quantified in EDTA plasma using the ScheBo®-M2-PK™ assay.

The development of Tumor M2-PK reflects the altered metabolic state of tumor cells. Therefore, the test can be used for various tumor types. The concentration of Tumor M2-PK correlates very well with tumor malignancy (staging). However, no correlation with histological grading was found.

Studies of a wide variety of human tumors show that an isoenzyme of pyruvate kinase, type Tumor M2 (Tumor M2-PK), is found in elevated concentrations in tumors. A correlation exists between tumor malignancy and the level of this conceptually novel tumor metabolic marker, Tumor M2-PK.

ScheBo®-Biotech has developed an enzyme immunoassay (ELISA) that can quantify tumor M2-PK in plasma. This test is based on two monoclonal antibodies that are highly specific for tumor M2-PK and therefore do not react with the other pyruvate kinase isoenzymes (types L, R, M1, and M2).

In urology, the suitability of this new tumor metabolic marker has so far been clinically proven, among other things, in renal cell carcinoma. Since Tumor M2-PK is a specific protein and not organ-specific, the test is suitable for diagnosing a wide variety of tumor types. The test detects the following tumors:
