GABA or gamma aminobutyric acid is a relaxing brain neurotransmitter, essential for mood balance.

Thanks to its action in the brain, GABA naturally promotes calm and relaxation, reduces muscle tone and slows the heart rate.
It is a neuromediator present in some nerve cells of the gray matter of the brain.
GABA is synthesized by the body from glutamic acid, under the influence of glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) which uses vitamin B6 as a cofactor, in the presence of vitamin C.
Stored in the granules of the presynaptic terminals and released into the synaptic cleft, it acts on specific GABA-A and GABA-B receptors located on the postsynaptic fiber.
Part of the released GABA is recovered by the presynaptic terminals of the neurons.
GABA appears to be involved in some phases of memory storage

GABA is also an inhibitory neurotransmitter, which means it slows down the transmission of nerve signals.
Together with glutamine, GABA is one of the main neurotransmitters in the brain.
GABA is a sedative, so benzodiazepines, tranquilizer drugs, work by binding to GABA receptors, modulating its action.
