Mastiha

The Mastiha Mediterra range includes several forms of presentation, adapted to different therapeutic purposes: capsules, chewing gum, toothpaste, mouthwash, powder or essential oil.

For example, in the case of Mastiha capsules, each capsule contains 280 mg of pure powder from Pistacia lentiscus var. Chia resin. It is a practical form for internal administration, intended in particular for the protection of the gastric mucosa and the reduction of abdominal discomfort associated with gastric reflux. Mastiha chewing gum is formulated with Chios mastic essential oil and natural sweeteners (sorbitol, xylitol, mannitol). 

The benefits of Mastiha in multiple clinical and physiological situations are:

• Supporting gastric and intestinal health by reducing the symptoms of reflux, gastritis, heartburn and postprandial discomfort.
• Combating Helicobacter pylori bacteria, recognised as one of the most important causes of gastric and duodenal ulcers.
• Improving oral hygiene, preventing dental plaque and tartar, maintaining fresh breath.
• Revitalising gums and assisting in the treatment of periodontitis.
• Protecting the oral mucosa against gastric acid reflux.
• Reducing sugar cravings by regulating insulin secretion and acting on taste receptors.
• Supports sinus health and reduces mild inflammation of the upper respiratory tract.

The recommended dose depends on the form of administration:

• Mastiha capsules: 2–4 capsules daily, taken 30 minutes before meals with a glass of water.
• Mastiha chewing gum: 3 pieces daily, preferably after main meals, each chewed for about 20 minutes.
• Mastiha toothpaste: use 2–3 times a day, after meals, for at least 2 minutes, for complete oral hygiene.

Mastiha is not recommended for people with known hypersensitivity to Pistacia lentiscus or any of the product's excipients. 

Administration should be avoided in young children without medical advice. 

Pregnant or breastfeeding women should also seek medical advice before use, as there is insufficient clinical data to confirm complete safety during these periods.

Mastiha administration can be integrated into a healthy lifestyle, combined with a balanced diet and avoidance of irritating foods (alcohol, coffee, acidic foods). In cases of gastritis or reflux, it is recommended to take the product on an empty stomach.

Mastiha-based supplements are suitable for vegetarians and do not contain gluten, being well tolerated by most patients. When used topically (gum, toothpaste), Mastiha offers a natural alternative to fluoridated products, being safe for daily use.

Mastiha is generally well tolerated. Reported side effects are rare and mild, and may include minor abdominal discomfort, nausea, dizziness or allergic skin reactions in sensitive individuals. 

To minimise side effects, start with the lowest possible dose and gradually increase to the full dose.

No significant interactions between Mastiha and other medicines have been reported. However, as a precaution, medical advice is recommended when taking it concomitantly with medicines for severe chronic diseases.

There are no major restrictions regarding food, but it is preferable to take the product before meals, on an empty stomach, for optimal absorption and maximum gastroprotective effect.

No cases of acute overdose with Mastiha have been reported. In theory, excessive administration could cause gastric discomfort, nausea or mild diarrhoea due to the volatile oil content. In such situations, it is recommended to discontinue administration and ensure adequate hydration.

Mastiha products should be stored in their original packaging at room temperature (below 25°C) in a dry place away from heat and direct light. Keep out of reach of children.
