Carnitine (3-hydroxy-4-N-trimethylaminobutyric acid) is technically classified as a vitaminoid. However, it can be synthesized during metabolism from the amino acids methionine and lysine, with the support of vitamin C, vitamin B6, niacin, and iron. Because carnitine plays a role in overall metabolism, particularly in fat metabolism, it is often equated with amino acids due to its importance.
