Numerous bacteria accumulate in the oral cavity and multiply on the tooth surfaces. These bacteria, along with food debris, form sticky plaque, which minerals can then harden into tartar. From tartar, plaque bacteria can penetrate the spaces between the teeth and secrete metabolic byproducts that destroy the connective tissue between the teeth and gums. This leads to receding gums, loose teeth, and the need for tooth loss or extraction. Plaque bacteria can spread throughout the body and endanger overall health.
