Colomint

Colomint is available in the form of enteric-coated soft capsules, designed to withstand the acidic gastric environment and break down only in the small intestine. This pharmaceutical technology ensures the controlled release of peppermint essential oil exactly in the digestive segment where it is most effective.

Each box contains 24 capsules. Each capsule provides 183 mg of peppermint essential oil, encapsulated in a matrix of gelatin, sorbitol and glycerol, with preservatives such as sodium ethyl and methyl hydroxybenzoate. 

Colomint capsules are indicated for the relief of functional digestive symptoms and are useful in the following situations:

• Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) with predominant spasms and bloating;
• Intestinal colic and abdominal pain caused by smooth muscle contractions;
• Flatulence and abdominal bloating;
• Digestive discomfort arising in the context of heavy meals or stress;
• Functional biliary disorders, in which the choleretic effect of peppermint oil supports bile secretion and fat digestion.

The dosage for Colomint peppermint oil varies depending on age and symptom severity:

• Adults: 1–2 capsules, three times a day, taken before meals with a glass of water.
• Children over 12 years of age: 1 capsule, three times a day, before meals.

The capsules should be swallowed whole, without chewing or breaking them, to ensure enteric protection. 

Although Colomint peppermint oil capsules are well tolerated, there are some situations in which administration should be avoided or carried out with caution:

• Known hypersensitivity to peppermint oil or any of the capsule excipients;
• Children under 12 years of age, due to the lack of clinical studies on safety;

Caution is advised in cases of severe gastroesophageal reflux or hiatal hernia, where menthol may relax the lower oesophageal sphincter and increase heartburn.

Colomint stands out thanks to its advanced enteric-coated formulation, which allows the active substance to be released in the intestine, avoiding irritating effects on the stomach. This feature makes it suitable for patients who are sensitive to the action of essential oils administered orally.

In addition, through its carminative and choleretic effect, the product not only helps to reduce spasms, but also optimises digestion and stimulates bile flow, supporting liver detoxification processes.

Adverse reactions are rare and usually mild. They may include:

• Gastric discomfort, epigastric burning sensation or acid reflux, especially in sensitive individuals;
• Allergic skin reactions (rash, itching, hives) in people with increased sensitivity to essential oils.

These symptoms usually disappear when administration is discontinued. If symptoms persist, medical advice should be sought.

Colomint can be taken concomitantly with most medicines, as no significant interactions have been reported. However, it is advisable to avoid simultaneous use with antacids or proton pump inhibitors, as they may cause premature dissolution of the capsule in the stomach.

In general, Colomint should be taken at least one hour apart from other oral medicines.

There are no clinical data indicating major risks associated with accidental overdose. However, excessive doses of peppermint oil may cause heartburn, diarrhoea and nausea. In case of accidental ingestion of a large amount, medical advice and symptomatic treatment are recommended.

Colomint should be stored at room temperature (below 25°C), away from moisture and direct sunlight. Keep out of the reach and sight of small children. It is recommended to check the expiry date on the packaging, as the product is stable until the date indicated by the manufacturer.
