Kreon 10,000, 20 gastro-resistant capsules, Mylan Healthcare

Kreon 10,000 is indicated in the treatment of exocrine insufficiency caused by:

• cystic fibrosis of the pancreas
• chronic pancreatitis
• pancreatectomy
• total gastrectomy
• partial gastric resection (Billroth I/II)
• neoplastic ductal obstruction (e.g. in pancreatic or common bile duct neoplasm).

Pancreatic enzyme supplementation may also be useful in the treatment of pancreatic pain or in the treatment of late allograft pancreatitis and exocrine pancreatic insufficiency in the elderly.

Composition:

• The active substance is pancreatin.
• One capsule contains pancreatin 150 mg (amylase 8000 U-FE, lipase 10000 U-FE, protease 600 U-FE)
• The other ingredients are: capsule contents: macrogol 4000, hypromellose phthalate, cetyl alcohol, triethyl citrate, dimethicone 1000
• Capsule: gelatin, red iron oxide (E 172), yellow iron oxide (E 172), black iron oxide (E 172), titanium dioxide (E 171), sodium lauryl sulfate.

Method of administration:

• The dosage is adapted to individual needs and depends on the severity of the disease and the content of the food.
• Unless otherwise prescribed by a doctor, in adults (including the elderly) and children: initially one or two capsules with each main meal and one capsule with each snack, then adjust the dose according to response
• Clinical experience shows that the effective dose can range between 5 and 15 capsules daily.
• The capsules should be swallowed with sufficient liquid (approximately 100 ml)
• It is recommended to take half or a third of the total dose at the beginning of the meal and the rest during the meal.
• Capsules and microspheres should be swallowed whole, without chewing or crushing.
• If swallowing capsules is difficult (e.g. in children or elderly patients), the capsules can be opened and the minimicrospheres added to a light meal that does not require chewing or taken with liquid.
• Any mixture of minimicrospheres in food or liquid should be taken immediately and should not be stored.
• Chewing or crushing the minimicrospheres, as well as adding the minimicrospheres to food with a pH greater than 5.5, destroys the protective enteric coating.

Contraindications:

Pancreatic enzymes should not be administered during the early phases of acute pancreatitis and in those patients with known hypersensitivity to porcine pancreatin.

Pregnancy, lactation and fertility:

• If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking any medicine.
• Your doctor will decide whether you should use Kreon and in what dose. Kreon can be used during breast-feeding.

Driving and using machines:

• Kreon is unlikely to affect your ability to drive or use machines.
