Description
Virgin argan oil with spray, 100ml, Sanflora
Argan is native to Morocco, being called the Tree of Life by the Berbers for the many benefits it brings.
It is a thorny tree (Argania spinosa) that grows exclusively in the southwest of Morocco on the Souss plateau, where there are about 21 million argan trees spread over an area of 800,000 ha.
Argan can reach a height of 8-10m and some trees can live up to 200 years. However, the roots extend to a considerable depth, which helps protect the soil against erosion and stop the advance of the Sahara desert.
Being a rare and endangered species, this area covered by argan trees was declared a biosphere reserve by UNESCO in 1998.
Located on the border of the Sahara, the argan tree is a species that has developed a remarkable resistance to temperature variations, to the scorching heat during the day and the penetrating cold during the night, in conditions of low precipitation and extreme winds.
Paradoxically, it is precisely this continuous adaptation to a hostile environment that made him develop those bioactive chemical compounds that are found in argan seeds and have the role of supporting the skin tissue.
Another name given to argan by the Berbers is that of Women's Gold because, traditionally, Berber women were the ones who passed on from mother to daughter the traditional, extremely laborious process of obtaining argan oil.
And the Berber women also used this oil to protect the skin in the harsh climatic conditions at the edge of the desert, to protect it from the strong winds and the burning sun.
Over time, long before it was recognized for its remarkable qualities by the Western world, the populations of Morocco used argan oil for:
- the skin of babies and small children
- soothing irritated skin
- treating/reducing the scars left by chicken pox
- treating eczema and juvenile acne
- prevention of stretch marks and drying of the skin in pregnant women
- wrist massage in case of rheumatism
- preventing hair loss
- to prevent drying of skin and hair due to harsh environmental conditions (strong sun, wind, cold).
The studies carried out in the last decades have demonstrated the antioxidant, antiproliferative, cancer prevention, antidiabetic and hypocholesterolemic effects of argan oil used in food.
In cosmetics, argan oil is attributed antioxidant, anti-aging, moisturizing, anti-acne and cicatrizing properties.
These effects are due both to the content rich in essential fatty acids and to the synergistic action of the fraction of unsaponifiable compounds, especially sterols and tocopherols.
Essential fatty acids
Argan oil has a high content of essential fatty acids, especially Omega 6 (linoleic acid, eicosenoic acid).
They are necessary to maintain optimal hydration of the skin and to prevent its premature aging.
Without them, the skin and hair dry out, and the nails become brittle.
In addition, research shows that linoleic acid has anti-inflammatory properties on the skin and improves the hydration status of the epidermis.
Linoleic acid is included in the composition of ceramides, lipid structures specific to the epidermis, whose integrity depends on it to perform its normal barrier function, one of the most important functions of the skin.
Since Omega 6 acids cannot be synthesized by the human body, in order to keep our skin healthy we must take these essential fatty acids either internally, from food, or through topical application, from body care products.
Sterols
Sterols (also called phytosterols) have an important role in maintaining the skin barrier in good condition.
The skin barrier is mainly represented by the outer layer of the epidermis, called stratum corneum or Stratum Corneum, a layer whose main function is to protect the body against mechanical, microbial or chemical aggressions of the external environment.
The stratum corneum is the main obstacle to the penetration of foreign substances through the skin.
In addition, it prevents the uncontrolled evaporation of water from our body.
However, these functions of the stratum corneum are dependent on its elasticity, determined mainly by the fatty substances it contains.
These fatty substances consist of ceramides, free fatty acids and cholesterol.
However, although it is found naturally in the skin barrier, cholesterol in its pure state when it is put in contact with the skin as an exogenous substance can lead to inflammation or acne.
By contrast, however, phytosterols are well tolerated by the skin and at the same time they mimic the function of cholesterol.
In addition, phytosterols have a strong anti-inflammatory effect.
Through several clinical studies, it has been shown that phytosterols have remarkable effects:
- Restore the skin barrier
- They improve skin elasticity and reduce the rough, rough appearance of dry skin
- They increase the production of collagen and hyaluronic acid in the dermis
Argan oil has a unique content of sterols (spinasterol, schottenol, delta 7 avenasterol, stigmasta-8, 22 diene-3b-ol, stigmasterol, campesterol).
Thanks to these compounds, argan oil:
- delays the skin aging process
- reduces inflammation
- it gives the skin a silky appearance
Tocopherols (vitamin E)
Argan oil is one of the richest oils in vitamin E (in the form of tocopherols).
By contrast, olive oil contains half the amount of vitamin E found in argan oil.
Tocopherols are important for their antioxidant role, protecting skin cells from aggressive environmental factors, such as exposure to UV radiation or pollution, factors that can affect our skin, hair, cuticles and nails.
The high content of tocopherols also explains the stability and resistance to oxidation (rancidity) of argan oil.
Polyphenols
Argan oil also contains polyphenols, in the form of vanillic acid, caffeic acid and tyrosol, antioxidant substances known for their ability to delay skin aging.
Polyphenols neutralize free radicals, fight skin inflammation and contribute to the reduction of sebum secretion.
Carotenoid and xanthophyll pigments
Thanks to them, argan oil exerts antioxidant and photoprotective action.
How to use:
- On its own, as a moisturizing, nourishing, revitalizing and anti-wrinkle care product
- For baby massage
- For the massage of pregnant women: argan oil, being rich in essential fatty acids and antioxidant substances, helps to maintain the elasticity of the skin and prevents it from drying out during pregnancy; stimulates the production of collagen and thus contributes to the prevention of the appearance of stretch marks (which are actually deep breaks in the collagen and elastin structures) or to their reduction
- For the care and protection of skin affected by eczema or psoriasis: argan oil contributes to the normal rehydration of the epidermis and to the restoration of its lipid structure and combats the excessive drying of skin tissues associated with these conditions, thus improving the lives of those suffering from these conditions
- To reduce the scars left by chicken pox
- In the case of dry skin, argan oil restores the lipid balance of the epidermis, facilitates water retention in the skin and helps the normal exfoliation of dead cells, absolutely necessary conditions for dry skin to return to normal
- In the case of oily skin, with excess sebum: there are studies that indicate that argan oil contributes to the reduction of sebum secretion; at the same time, it helps restore the lipid barrier of the epidermis in the case of those people who, in order to combat excess sebum, use strongly degreasing and irritating products
- In the case of sensitive, irritated or acne-prone skin: thanks to its anti-inflammatory compounds, argan oil soothes irritated skin and at the same time, maintains an optimal water content in the epidermis necessary to reduce inflammation, contributes to the normalization of sebum secretion in case of acne and to the reduction of scars left by this condition
- It is an anti-aging product: argan oil helps in cellular renewal, in rehydrating the epidermis and in increasing collagen production, thus contributing to the firming and stretching of skin tissues; at the same time, thanks to the high content of antioxidant substances, it fights free radicals responsible for skin aging
- For hair and scalp: argan oil contributes to the rehydration of dry hair, resets the hair cuticles, restores its shine and makes it easier to arrange. In addition, argan oil restores the dry and irritated scalp and combats the irritation of the hair follicles
- For nails and cuticles: argan oil restores the natural shine of nails, helps restore brittle nails and prevents cuticles from drying out, thus protecting nails from possible bacterial infections favored by cuticle degradation
- After the beach: argan oil restores the water balance of the epidermis and antioxidants prevent the degradation of skin lipids initiated by UV radiation
- In cold weather: argan oil forms a protective film that reduces transepidermal water loss, keeping the skin in good condition
- In massage: argan oil being an oil that is quite easily absorbed into the skin, it can be used in combination with essential oils or other lipophilic actives, helping their transcutaneous absorption; at the same time, argan oil helps to reduce muscle cramps and rheumatic pains.
