Description
Baneocin powder, 250 IU/5000 IU per gram, 10 g, Sandoz
Baneocin is active in all infections caused by pathogens sensitive to neomycin and/or bacitracin.
The action of Baneocin ointment is enhanced by a dressing.
Indications:
Baneocin powder:
- Small bacterial skin infections eg Herpes simplex, Herpes zoster/chickenpox, impetigo suppurating, infected calf ulcers, infected eczema, bacterial buttock dermatitis (newborns)
- Prevention of umbilical cord infections in newborns
- After surgical (dermatological) interventions, Baneocin powder can be used as an adjuvant in postoperative care (excisions and cauterizations, treatment of rags, perineal rupture, episiotomy, suppurating wounds and scars).
Baneocin ointment:
- Focal bacterial skin infections: Boils, anthrax (after surgical treatment), chin folliculitis, deep folliculitis, suppurative hydrosadenitis, periporitis, perionyxis. Skin infections of limited extent: Contagious impetigo, infected calf ulcers, secondary infected eczema, secondary infected wounds and cuts, hot water scalds, burns, cosmetic surgery and skin grafts (also prophylactic and ointment dressings)
- After surgery: Baneocin ointment can be used as an adjunct during postoperative care. Baneocin ointment spread on gauze pads is effective in patients with infections or wounds (eg infections of the external ear canal, wounds or surgical bedsores).
Composition:
Baneocin powder/ointment: 1 g contains: Bacitracin zinc: 250 IU, Neomycin sulfate: 5000 IU (5 mg).
How to use:
- A thin layer of powder or ointment is applied to the wound, possibly covered with a dressing
- Dosage: Generally 2-4 applications with Baneocin-powder or 2-3 with Baneocin-ointment per day, both in adults and children
- In patients with burns covering more than 20% of the body surface, Baneocin will be applied only once a day (in particular in patients with reduced renal function), because the active substances can be absorbed
- In the case of a local treatment, it is advisable not to exceed a dose of 1 g of neomycin per day (corresponding to 200 g of Baneocin powder or ointment) for 7 days
- In case of recurrence, the dose will be halved.
Contraindications:
- Known hypersensitivity to bacitracin and/or neomycin or other aminoglycoside antibiotics
- Baneocin should not be applied to severe extensive skin lesions as absorption of the drug may cause ototoxicity up to hearing loss
- If there is a possibility of uncontrolled absorption, Baneocin will not be administered to patients with serious excretory disorders of cardiac or renal origin, as well as to those with vestibular and/or cochlear lesions
- In case of perforated eardrum, do not apply Baneocin in the external auditory canal
- Do not apply Baneocin to the ocular mucosa
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: In case of possible resorption, Baneocin is applied with great caution; neomycin, like all aminoglycoside antibiotics, crosses the placenta
- The appearance of lesions of the cochlear apparatus in the face has been described in the case of administration of large doses by parenteral route.
Precautions:
- In the case of applying doses higher than those prescribed (especially in patients with trophic ulcers), it is recommended to carefully observe nephrotoxic and/or ototoxic signs, due to the possibility of Baneocin absorption
- In patients with reduced liver and/or kidney functions, before and during intensive treatment with Baneocin, due to the increased risk of toxic effects, both urine and blood tests and audiometric tests will be performed
- The possibility of ototoxicity requires cautious use in older chronic otitis media
- In case of a perforated eardrum, it is not applied in the external auditory canal
- In patients with acidosis, myasthenia gravis or other neuromuscular diseases, where uncontrolled absorption may occur, attention should be directed to neuromuscular blockade
- Calcium and neostigmine can prevent such blockages
- In prolonged treatments, the possibility of the appearance of resistant germs, especially fungi, must be taken into account
- In such cases, the most appropriate treatment will be applied
- In case of allergy or superinfections, stop the treatment.
Pregnancy, breast-feeding and fertility:
- If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to become pregnant, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine
- It is not recommended to use Baneocin ointment in pregnant and lactating women. Baneocin skin powder crosses the placenta
- The application of Baneocin ointment to the breasts of breastfeeding women is contraindicated.
Driving vehicles and using machines:
- The effects of Baneocin ointment on the ability to drive vehicles or use machines and equipment are not known.
