D-mannose is a six-carbon simple sugar that occurs naturally in the human body as well as in some plants and fruits. Mannose is very similar to glucose in its structure. However, subtle differences in the spatial configuration of both compounds cause them to have different properties.

Unlike glucose, which is absorbed quickly and directly, mannose must first be converted to fructose and then to glucose. Because of this, mannose causes a much weaker insulin response, has a low glycemic index, and has minimal effect on blood sugar levels.

D-mannose and urinary tract infections

Urinary tract infections are a frequent condition, especially in women. Their urinary tracts have a slightly different structure than men's and are therefore more susceptible to bacterial infections.

In most cases, the cause of infections is the introduction of bacteria into the urethral opening. Bacteria adhere to the walls of the urethra, multiply and then travel up the urethra to the bladder, causing unpleasant symptoms such as frequent urination (frequent urination), pain and burning during urination, and an unpleasant smell of urine.
