Maitake is nicknamed "dancing mushroom". Why? Legend has it that finding this very rare mushroom was so exciting that it made the pickers dance. In Japanese medical tradition it is used as a general tonic and rejuvenator.

The secret of this fungus is the wealth of β-glucans it produces. These are major active substances, from the polysaccharide family. Beta glucans from Grifola frondosa were approved in China in 2010 as adjuvants in the treatment of proliferative disorders1. Maitake appears to act on the immune system by activating macrophages, T cells and NK (natural killer) cells2. A 2017 study suggests the ability of this medicinal mushroom to induce apoptosis of cells that have undergone mutations in the mammary gland3. In 2021, another study highlights the process of apoptosis and autophagy, triggered by beta glucans from Maitake, on liver mutant cells4. Another work highlights the improvement of the general condition of chemotherapy patients, due to the synergy5 that Shiitake has with the standard medication specific to neoplasias.
