Description
Manuka Honey MGO 550+ 500g is imported honey from remote New Zealand that contains methylglyoxal (MGO) in an amount of 55mg or more per 100g. This honey is produced only in certain places in New Zealand where shrubs rarely of the genus Leptospermum scoparium grows. Due to the properties of the pollen of this plant, Manuka MGO honey differs from honey produced, for example, in Europe: in taste, smell and high methylglyoxal (MGO) content. Manuka honey has a taste that experts describe as mineral and slightly bitter. Its scent includes notes of warmth and wet earth.
In 2014, the New Zealand government published a working group study on defining qualification criteria for manuka honey, which stated that for a product to be called manuka honey it must:
- be homogenous honey produced in New Zealand, during the period that coincides with the flowering of manuka bushes;
- to be produced mainly from the nectar of Leptospermum scoparium plants,
- have a specific range of specific conductivity,
- have a taste described as mineral and slightly bitter and a strong smell with notes of heather and wet soil,
- contain manuka bush pollen and other ingredients including methylglyoxal (MGO).
Manuka Health New Zealand is one of the pioneers in the production of manuka honey and a major exporter of this honey.
