Mimosa tenuiflora (Jurema, Tepezcohuite) is an evergreen, perennial tree, a shrub native to the northeastern region of Brazil (Paraíba, Rio Grande do Norte, Ceará, Pernambuco, Bahia). It is also found in Mexico (Oaxaca and the coast of Chiapas). The tree can grow up to 8 m high, and the flowers are white, finely scented. The properties of the bark of the Mimosa tenuiflora tree, also called the skin tree or Tepezcohuite du Mexique, have been exploited since the time of the Mayans in the traditional medicine of the indigenous people in the native areas, to cure various infections and to treat inflammations and wounds.
Today:
Mimosa tenuiflora is known for its ability to restore the epidermis affected by various factors. It deeply regenerates skin tissues, has the ability to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, a particularly important aspect for tissue regeneration. Since the 90s, it has been widely used as an ingredient in various products intended for healing and regenerating skin tissue.
Composition:
- flavonoids - reduce permeability, delay the physiological aging process of the skin;
- tannins - astringent and calming effect (also responsible for the red coloring of mimosa powder maceration);
- saponins and other microelements: zinc, copper, manganese, which play an important role in cell protection and regeneration;
- alkaloids, lipids, phytosterols, glucosides, xylose, rhamnose, arabinose, lupeol.

- it can also be used as such, mixed with (floral) water, in the form of fresh masks and poultices, possibly with the addition of clay and other powders or active ingredients;
- in toners, creams, lotions and various cosmetic preparations it is included in the form of a filtered aqueous macerate, in the usual concentration of 5-10%;
- in emulsions, the filtered maceration is used as an ingredient in the aqueous phase.
