Properties of vitamin D
Vitamin D is fat soluble and plays an extremely important role in human health. It is produced in the skin under the influence of UV rays and can also be obtained through food. Skin synthesis in Poland is insufficient, therefore vitamin D3 supplementation is recommended throughout the year.
Vitamin D plays a key role in maintaining healthy bones and teeth by supporting the absorption of phosphorus from the intestines. Its deficiencies can lead to deterioration of bone mineralization, which in turn leads to rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults. Rickets is manifested by deformations of the skeleton, bone pain and muscle weakness. Osteomalacia causes bone and muscle pain and increases the risk of fractures.
Vitamin D deficiency can occur at any stage of life and affects children, adults and the elderly. People with disorders that can lead to vitamin D deficiency should pay special attention to the correct level of vitamin D in the body. The indication for the use of vitamin D in a dose of 4000 IU is also age over 75 years. Obese adults (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2) require a dose of vitamin D twice that recommended for peers of normal body weight.
