Vitamin D3 is a cofactor of vitamin K2, which makes the effect of one dependent on the presence of the other in the cellular reactions that manage the calcium balance in the body:
- vitamin D3 stimulates the synthesis of osteocalcin – vitamin K2 activates osteocalcin, which fixes calcium in the bone matrix;
- vitamin D3 contributes to increasing the synthesis of the Matrix Gla protein (MGP) - natural vitamin K2 activates the MGP, which inhibits the fixation of calcium in the arteries.
Vitamin K2 (menaquinone), in addition to the role of reducing calcifiers on the arterial walls, activates the calcium binding mechanisms in the bone matrix.

An insufficient dietary intake of vitamin K2 increases the risk of:
- inefficient binding of calcium in bone tissues resulting in their fragility (osteoporosis and bone fragility)
- deposition of calcium circulating in the blood in the arteries, leading to inelastic and rigid arteries increasing the risk of arteriosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases
- Vitamin D3, also known as calciferol, is produced in the body when ultraviolet rays come into contact with the skin. The major role of vitamin D is to maintain normal levels of calcium and phosphorus in the blood. Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium, which builds and maintains strong bones. It also plays an important role in maintaining muscle function and strengthening the immune system.
