Black Cohosh

Black Cohosh is mainly available in the form of vegetable capsules, suitable for both vegetarian and vegan diets. 

For example, Black Cohosh Secom contains 540 mg of root extract per capsule, whilst Black Cohosh GNC provides 40 mg of standardised extract (2.5% triterpene glycosides), ensuring a consistent and reproducible dosage.

Black Cohosh is primarily recommended for:

• relieving symptoms associated with the menopause, such as hot flushes, night sweats, irritability, changes in appetite and sleep disturbances;
• maintaining neurochemical balance by influencing receptors involved in thermoregulation and the regulation of serotonin and dopamine levels;
• supporting the health of the vaginal mucosa and skin, which are often affected by oestrogen deficiency;
• maintaining normal cardiovascular function, by supporting vascular relaxation and lipid balance;
• supporting bone health by influencing the activity of cells involved in bone formation and resorption.

The dosage depends on the form of presentation and the manufacturer’s recommendations:

Solaray Black Cohosh 540 mg: 1 capsule twice daily, to be taken with meals with approximately 200 ml of water, or as directed by a specialist doctor;

GNC Black Cohosh 40 mg: 1 capsule daily, as a dietary supplement.

Regular intake for several weeks is recommended to allow the beneficial effects to take hold, with periodic review.

Black Cohosh is not recommended:

• for children;
• pregnant or breastfeeding women;
• people with known hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients.

Caution is advised in individuals with liver disease or hormone-dependent conditions such as endometriosis, uterine fibroids, or ovarian or uterine tumours.

As a natural product, Black Cohosh may vary in colour, smell or appearance between batches, without any impact on its efficacy or safety. Every batch of raw material and finished product undergoes rigorous testing to ensure its quality, bioavailability and safety.

It is also recommended to consult a specialist before use in the case of individuals undergoing drug therapy or with chronic conditions.

In general, Black Cohosh is well tolerated. The following may rarely occur:

• mild gastrointestinal disturbances;
• headache;

Serious adverse reactions are rare, but any unusual symptoms that occur whilst taking the product require discontinuation of the product and medical assessment.

Black cohosh may interact with:

• antihypertensive drugs, enhancing their effect;
• iron supplements, which is why it is recommended to take them at least 2 hours apart;
• other products with hormonal or phytoestrogenic effects, for which caution is advised.

No significant food interactions are known, but maintaining a balanced diet enhances the supplement’s effectiveness.

No serious cases of overdose have been reported when used in accordance with the recommendations. Exceeding the recommended doses may increase the risk of mild digestive or neurological side effects. In such situations, it is recommended to stop taking the supplement and consult a doctor.

Black Cohosh products should be stored in their original packaging, in a dry place at room temperature, away from direct light and moisture. It is important to keep them out of the reach of children to prevent accidental ingestion.
